Welcome to the Polio Channel
Polio is a highly contagious disease that is caused by the poliovirus. While it used to be a common disease in the United States, affecting thousands of people, the introduction of the polio vaccine has caused the number of cases to drop dramatically. The symptoms a person experiences depend on the severity of the disease. Because there is nothing that can kill the poliovirus, treatment focuses on supportive care -- treating the symptoms that result from the illness while the body fights the infection.
