Polio Treatment

Long-Term Treatment

For those that develop a disability from polio, there are treatment considerations to discuss with the healthcare provider, including:

  • Exercise
  • Mobility aids
  • Breathing equipment
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Support groups
  • Counseling.

Prognosis

While there is no cure for polio disease, most people recover from polio without any long-term problems. Less than 1 percent of people will develop permanent paralysis. Unfortunately, there is no treatment that can prevent this complication.
