Preventing Post-Polio Syndrome

Polio survivors often ask if there is a way to prevent post-polio syndrome. Currently, there is no treatment available that will prevent post-polio syndrome or stop the deterioration of surviving neurons.
 
Physicians recommend that polio disease survivors:
 
  • Maintain a well balanced diet
  • Get the proper amount of sleep
  • Avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking and overeating
  • Follow an exercise program (see Post-Polio Syndrome and Exercise).
